For many families, Child Benefit provides a vital lifeline, worth more than £1,350 a year for a first or only child. But as teenagers turn 16, those payments stop automatically, unless parents take action to extend their claim.
That’s why HMRC has reminded more than 1.5 million families to renew Child Benefit before the 31 August deadline. If your teenager is staying in approved education or training, renewing ensures you don’t miss out on money that can make a real difference during these costly years.

Why does it matter?
• Child Benefit pays £26.05 a week for the eldest or only child and £17.25 a week for additional children, adding up to more than £1,350 a year.
• Claiming also helps parents build up National Insurance credits, which count towards their state pension.
• It only takes a few minutes to renew online through the HMRC app, the GOV.UK website, or by scanning the QR code sent in reminder letters.
Remember: If you don’t renew, payments will stop after 31 August, just as the new school year begins.

Supporting for families beyond Child Benefit
At FTCT, we know how important this income is. When budgets are already stretched, losing over £100 a month can put huge pressure on family life, especially during back-to-school season.
That’s where we step in. Our grants are designed to help children whose parents are struggling financially.
If you’re renewing your Child Benefit, take a moment to explore how FTCT’s grants could offer an extra layer of support for your family.

Are you a parent struggling financially? Do you need help?
If you work in the UK fashion and textile industry and are finding it hard to make ends meet, FTCT may be able to help. We believe every child deserves the chance to thrive, which is why we provide grants to support families when times are tough.
