Our Story News and Blog Making School Uniform Costs More Manageable For many families, school uniform costs are one of the biggest expenses that come with the start of a new school year. In FTCT's recent parent survey, 50% of parents told us that saving for school costs simply isn't possible because everyday expenses take priority. We also found that nearly half of parents had sent their child to school in uniform that was too small or no longer fit properly because replacing it wasn't affordable. With back-to-school costs adding up quickly, planning ahead where possible can help reduce some of the pressure. Here are some practical ways families can save money on school uniforms this year. Shop early and look out for summer sales Many retailers begin reducing school uniform ranges during the summer months. Shopping before the peak back-to-school rush can help families take advantage of promotions, multi-buy offers, and better stock availability. Popular retailers that often offer affordable school uniform ranges include: Tesco F&F Sainsbury's Tu Marks & Spencer John Lewis George at Asda Matalan Next Check whether uniforms still fit before buying It can be tempting to buy everything at once, but checking what still fits can help avoid unnecessary spending. Children may be able to reuse items such as: Blazers PE kits School bags Coats Sports equipment Explore second-hand uniform options Many schools, PTAs and local community groups now offer second-hand uniform sales throughout the year. These schemes can provide high-quality uniform items at a fraction of the usual cost and can be especially helpful for branded school items. Spread purchases across the summer If possible, buying items gradually over the summer can help avoid a large expense all at once. Even purchasing one or two items each month can make costs feel more manageable by the time September arrives.
